Oakland, California to Host 2022 ULI Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition

The ULI Advisory Services Program (ASP) is excited to offer an opportunity for students and young leaders to engage in one of ULI’s hallmark programs that enables the Institute to fulfill its mission to shape the future of the built environment for transformative impact in communities worldwide in real-time. Participants will have the chance to learn about land use, real estate and planning challenges facing communities today and help a multi-disciplinary team of volunteer experts make recommendations that can impact a community’s tomorrow. Benefits of Participation:
• Exposure to land use and development issues in a real-world setting
• Experience working with a multidisciplinary team of land use and real estate professionals
• Practical experience in skills such as technical writing, graphic design, and report preparation
• Potential to receive course or continuing education credit (depending on the individual institution or organization)
• Exposure to a variety of geographic locations, each with their own local economic conditions as well as unique political and community practices
• Recognition in the panel’s presentation and final report for the participant and their school or firm/organization
For all offerings, ULI will cover all travel and associated expenses during the panel engagement including on-site lodging, food and travel to and from the panel location, when in-person. Compensation for other expenses is at the discretion of the panel project manager.
Externship
An opportunity for a brief immersion into the Advisory Services panel process. Individuals participating in an externship will provide support to panelists and ULI staff for the duration of the panel engagement.
Consideration for participation in the externship program is as follows:
• Candidates must be working within the real estate and planning fields or currently enrolled in a graduate level or advanced undergraduate program with a focus on real estate development, urban planning, design, business or public administration, public policy or similar discipline
• Candidates must have a written recommendation from their supervisor or school/faculty advisor/dean confirming their support and the candidate’s availability to participate in the panel
• Candidates will work under the supervision of the ULI project manager. Panels are typically 3 to 5 days and conducted either in-person or virtually depending upon the scope of the assignment. In-person panels will require travel to the panel location
• Candidates will provide support to the project manager including presentation preparation, research, interview coordination, graphics preparation and report writing as assigned
• ULI is willing to work with a university or professional organization to enable the participate to receive course or educational credits, as appropriate
Internship
A short-term opportunity for an immersion into the Advisory Services panel process and deliverable production. The intern will provide valuable support to volunteer experts and ULI staff and learn how the panel process brings together multi-disciplinary teams of real estate, planning, architecture, business, and policy experts to provide real world solutions to difficult land use issues.
Consideration for participation in the internship program is as follows:
• Candidates must be working within the real estate and planning fields or currently enrolled in a graduate level or advanced undergraduate program with a focus on real estate development, urban planning, design, business or public administration, public policy or similar discipline
• Candidates must have a written recommendation from their supervisor or school/faculty advisor/dean confirming their support and the candidate’s availability to participate in the panel
• Candidates will work under the supervision of the ULI project manager. Panels are typically 3 to 5 days and conducted either in-person or virtually depending upon the scope of the assignment. In-person panels will require travel to the panel location

• Candidates will also undertake a principal role of post-panel report writing and editing. Post panel writing and editing usually consists of 20-30 hours of work
• ULI is willing to work with a university or professional organization to enable the participate to receive course or educational credits as appropriate
Panel Writer
A short-term opportunity for an immersion into the Advisory Services panel process and deliverable production. Writers will participate in and observe the panel process and produce the first draft and supporting material for the panel’s final report. The panel writer will receive a stipend of $1000.
