Virtual Advisory Services – COVID-19 Update

In response to the travel restrictions associated with COVID-19, ULI has developed Advisory Services offerings that can be conducted virtually. Virtual offerings are ideal for land use, real estate, and municipal policy challenges that may not require a site visit from ULI.

Virtual Advisory Services Panel (vASP)

These 2.5-day panels are tailored to meet a sponsor’s needs, following the traditional Advisory Services panel process. vASPs convene a multi-disciplinary panel of 4 to 6 experts with a range of professional backgrounds and whose skills meet the needs of the identified challenge.

Using a problem statement, four to six challenge questions, and briefing materials, the panel convenes virtually to learn from the sponsor, engage in facilitated stakeholder interviews, and deliberate and build consensus on recommendations. Findings are presented to the sponsor at the culmination of the program. Sponsors receive a video recording of deliberations and an Executive Summary Report of panel recommendations.

Virtual Project Analysis Session (VirtualPAS)

Project Analysis Sessions encourage creative thinking and problem-solving between a sponsor and a multi-disciplinary panel of 4 to 6 experts on a succinct and direct intractable challenge. These intimate, conversational offerings are structured and facilitated to yield in-depth, project-specific, and pragmatic recommendations in a short period of time.

VirtualPAS are offered in two formats. Both offerings include a video recording of deliberations and an optional written memo of recommendations.

Half-Day VirtualPAS
This is a three-hour analysis of a specific challenge and takes place in an intimate, conversational format.

Full-Day VirtualPAS
This eight-hour offering builds on the half-day program and includes an opportunity to engage in a limited capacity with area stakeholders in addition to the VirtualPAS sponsor.

Advisory Services

“The Advisory Services program is, in my opinion, the very best outreach program offered by ULI. It truly reflects our core mission of making the built environment better for all.”

Jim DeFrancia
Life Trustee, ULI
Principal, Lowe Enterprises

Together we are changing the world, one community at a time.

For more than 70 years, ULI members have delivered change in our cities through ULI’s Advisory Services. Whether it be the devastation of disaster, food access and healthy design, or a shortage of housing choices, Advisory Services panels have offered unbiased and independent solutions to the most complex problems facing communities.

Through this program, ULI members integrate into communities dealing with a wide array of real estate and land use challenges to provide unbiased, expert advice and specific recommendations for improvement. Members link together with local leaders to draft a plan to revive, rethink, and restore communities around the globe to ultimately enact change and improve the lives of the people who live there.

Panels bring together the best and brightest from ULI’s diverse membership — developers, planners, financiers, market analysts, economists, architects, designers, and public officials — to provide practical solutions and objective advice not available from any other source.

Advisory Services Panel Impact Assessment Report

Since 1947, more than 650 panels have assisted with the redevelopment of communities in 47 U.S. states, 12 countries, and 4 continents. This report tells the stories of 11 of these panels, which took place around the world between 1948 and 2011 and cover topics ranging from the rebuilding of downtown Oklahoma City following the 1995 bombing to the redevelopment of Kai Tak Airport in Hong Kong.

ULI Advisory Program Impact Assessment: Retail

A ULI Advisory Services Program Report

Lessons Learned from Retail Development – This ULI Advisory Services Program report, prepared in collaboration with Chicago Trend, shares the stories of eight ULI Advisory Services panels and extracted the lessons they offer for successful retail development.

This impact assessment of Advisory Services panels was achieved through a generous grant from John Bucksbaum and the ULI Foundation. Throughout his career, Bucksbaum has been a tireless supporter of the Urban Land Institute and its numerous outreach programs.

“For healthy communities to exist, they need healthy retail.”
John Bucksbaum | CEO, Bucksbaum Properties
