The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) recently released their guide, Urban Planning for City Leaders. The handbook, written by ULI/Citistates Summit participant Pablo Vaggione of Design Convergence, provides leaders and decision-makers with a framework for decision-making around best practices in urban planning.
The guide was launched by Dr Joan Clos, Executive Director of UN-HABITAT last week in London, in an event hosted by Siemens and with the participation of Boris Johnson, Mayor of London; Mpho Parks Tau, Executive Mayor of Johannesburg; Wolfgang Schuster, Lord Mayor of Stuttgart; Michael Bloomberg, Mayor of New York City, via video message; as well as other leading policy makers and experts. Rick Rosan, president of the ULI Foundation, also spoke in a panel on creating urban land value.
Dr Clos remarked that “This Guide has been designed to fill the gap between the technical and the policy dimensions of urban planning and to help local leaders to better communicate with their planning departments. It offers practical advice and insight into how leaders around the world can succeed in leveraging capacities and know-how from communities, professionals and the private sector in tackling pressing urban development needs.”
