Today, on Juneteenth, we join hands to acknowledge and commemorate the historic emancipation of enslaved African Americans.
Juneteenth, also known as Jubilee Day, Freedom Day, and Emancipation Day, symbolizes the liberation of enslaved African Americans. On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, federal troops arrived, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, to announce the end of slavery. This transformative moment marked a turning point in American history, reminding us of the resilience and strength of those who fought for their freedom.
Juneteenth represents an opportunity for all of us to celebrate the diverse tapestry of our nation and honor the contributions of Black Americans. At ULI, we are committed to pursuing unrelenting efforts to shape the built environment toward diverse, equitable, and inclusive communities. We continue to believe that current and future industry actions can—and must—remedy the impact of exclusionary practices that have affected the Black community in the real estate industry and thereby create access and foster unity..
We encourage our members to reflect upon the significance of Juneteenth and engage in celebrations that honor this cultural tradition.
