The St. Regis Chicago is a gravity-defying visual masterpiece, composed of three interconnected towers with a suspended central stem, developed by Magellan Development Group, designed by acclaimed architecture practice Studio Gang and realized by bKL Architecture.
The third tallest building in the Chicago skyline and standing at 101-stories, The St. Regis Chicago consists of 393 condominiums, a 5-star hotel with 192 guest rooms, restaurants and amenity spaces. The building’s residential and hotel amenities combine at the upper levels to create a vibrant social center.
The Residences at The St. Regis Chicago offers residents the ultimate luxury living experience complete with a resident only amenity floor featuring a sky terrace with outdoor pool, a private resident lounge and dining room, a demonstration kitchen, a state-of-the-art fitness center, a conference center, a private viewing room, a golf lounge and a children’s activity room.
The St. Regis Chicago hotel offers guests and local luminaries a new viewpoint on sophisticated dining, bespoke service, and avant-garde design. Combining lavish style and modern design, the hotel features 159 luxurious guestrooms and 33 exquisite suites, an indoor pool with outdoor terrace, spa, fitness room, ballroom, meeting rooms, and two upscale dining destinations.
The St. Regis Chicago tightly knits the downtown Lakeshore East community to its surroundings with unprecedented urban connections and enhanced public access to the Chicago River and the Lakefront. The project is located in Lakeshore East in the heart of Chicago’s downtown and a short walk from the city’s premier cultural offerings.
Clad in a gradient of green-blue glass and supported by a reinforced concrete structure, The St. Regis Chicago is composed of an interconnected series of stacked, frustum-shaped volumes that move rhythmically in and out of plane and extend to various heights. These interconnected volumes house 393 condominiums, as well as a 192-room 5-star hotel, restaurants, and amenity spaces. An innovative structural system minimizes structure in the center at ground level, creating a key pedestrian connection between the Chicago Riverwalk and Lakeshore East Park.
The essential “building block” of the architecture is a 12-story truncated pyramid called a frustum. Stacked and nested, right-side up and upside-down, the frustums form the tower’s flowing volumes, which are made entirely of vertical elements. The frustum geometry creates a tall building with eight corners instead of four, providing inhabitants with daylight and fresh air from multiple orientations, while also allocating green space atop the building’s various heights. Reinforcing the tower’s flowing appearance is a gradient of high-performance glass that has been optimized for solar performance.
The multi-stem massing concept was driven by program and site. Nesting and interconnecting, the stems create a larger floorplate at the lower levels, supporting a double-loaded corridor for the hotel where all three stems connect, while staying in scale with the surroundings as the building negotiates the site.
The St. Regis Chicago’s amenity spaces are shared between residents and hotel guests to encourage a lively social environment.
The St. Regis Chicago is located in the Lakeshore East, a multi-award-winning master-planned community developed and built by Magellan Development Group. The community is on the south bank of the Chicago River that is located east of Michigan Avenue and west of Lake Shore Drive and used to be a working port and rail yard 50 years ago.
Lakeshore East is an urban oasis in Chicago’s downtown area and features a 6-acre park that serves as a botanical centerpiece to the neighborhood. From its wide, open green space to its intimate seating areas that have produced numerous design awards, the park might best be described as a special front yard to the thousands of people who live and work in and near Lakeshore East. Among its highly acclaimed features are a children’s play park, dog park, and attractive ornamental and water gardens.
Notable milestones of The St. Regis Chicago’s development include its groundbreaking in August 2016, topping off in April 2019 and its first resident occupancies in The Residences of The St. Regis Chicago in December 2020 and the completion and opening of The St. Regis Chicago hotel in May 2023.
