The Gordon H. Mansfield Veterans Community, named after a veteran who won a Purple Heart, has 70 units of supportive housing for veterans with different income levels, including homeless veterans. WinnCompanies, an award-winning owner, manager, and developer of multifamily housing, and Soldier On, Inc., a non-profit that serves homeless veterans, partnered to develop the community.

70 one-bedroom apartments are available to a range of income levels: 18 units are designated for individuals earning up to 30 % of Area Median Income (AMI); 24 units at 50% of AMI; 10 units at 60% of AMI, and 18 units at 80% AMI. It features several design components that make the property unique for veterans. Soundproofing was improved throughout to help with PTSD, while continuous insulation and Energy Star windows help with year-round comfort. All units are wheelchair-accessible and fully ADA compliant. There is a “women’s wing” for female veterans who want more privacy, which has ten units and its own common spaces and is separated from the rest of the building.

Gordon H. Mansfield Veterans Community provides homeless, low-income, and moderate-income veterans with wraparound support services and programs. Unfortunately, many organizations that work with the homeless are not equipped to deal with the unique needs of veterans. Soldier On fills that gap. Support staff assist residents with their medical, financial, and personal needs. Case managers work with residents to obtain benefits, coordinate transportation, and prepare meals. All residents receive one free meal a day. Staff can help residents search for and apply for jobs. Residents can also access various healthcare services, including individual and group counseling, addiction support, and a specialized holistic wellness program.

It offers convenient access to the Garden State Parkway and N.J. State Routes 33 and 66. In addition, the Jersey Shore Premium Outlets, a Walmart Supercenter, and the Twin Brook Golf Center are walkable. Although the community has 178 surface parking spaces, free of charge, Soldier On provides complimentary on-demand shuttle service for residents. The project created a stretch of new sidewalk, filling in a pedestrian connectivity gap and allowing residents to safely traverse from the community and neighboring senior housing facility and to neighborhood amenities.
