All planning and development are local, but what happens inside the Beltway can have major implications for states and localities. Three sessions at the Terwilliger Center’s Housing Opportunity 2013 conference March 20−22 in Seattle, Washington, will cover all the latest housing policy news from D.C. and help participants understand the implications for their own neck of the woods.

The conference will kick off with a general session, “The Future of Housing Policy” (March 21 at 9:30 a.m.), featuring a discussion on the recently released recommendations of the Bipartisan Policy Center’s Housing Commission. “Reducing Federal Deficits: It’s Time for Housing Finance Reform” (March 21 at 1:30 p.m.) builds on a recent study by Smart Growth America that finds that the federal government spends or commits approximately $450 billion each year to real estate programs. This session will discuss how key policy reforms and recommendations can reduce this enormous price tag and align public policy to meet market demands for housing in walkable, sustainable developments across the country. Presenters at “Around the Beltway and Beyond” (March 22 at 10:45 a.m.) will share updates on the current federal policy landscape and what it may mean for real estate development in 2013 and beyond.
