WASHINGTON (May 11, 2023) – Diane Hoskins, Co-CEO of Gensler, has been appointed as the new global chair of the Urban Land Institute (ULI). She will succeed Peter Ballon, who served as global chair since 2021. Hoskins’ term will begin in July of this year and she will serve as the global chair for the next two years, providing guidance and further advancing ULI’s mission commitments, which include: connecting a global network of interdisciplinary real estate professionals to solve the most pressing land use challenges and prepare for a resilient future; knowledge sharing and education to create best practices for equitable and sustainable land use; and driving impact in communities through philanthropic engagement.
“I cannot think of a more trusted and accomplished leader to assume the role of global chair and build on ULI’s rich 87-year-old legacy,” said Peter Ballon, global head of real estate for CPP Investments and global chair of ULI. “During my tenure as global chair of ULI and as the demands of cities were already rapidly evolving, I saw the pandemic continue to upend daily life in cities and around the world, but I also saw our members step up to meet the challenge, placing a renewed emphasis on ULI’s goals that enable diverse communities to flourish. Diane’s role as the global chair coupled with her extraordinary leadership at Gensler, her diverse background in real estate, sustainable design, and focus on climate action will position ULI to further enhance its work and positively impact the places we live, work, and play.”
“The Urban Land Institute represents the finest thought leadership and best practice in the real estate industry, and I am honored to serve as the next global chair,” said Diane Hoskins, Co-CEO of Gensler and ULI’s global chair-elect. “As members of ULI, we know that we are stronger together – and it is with this strength that we will pursue and achieve our vision of a strong real estate sector, decarbonizing the built environment, attainable housing, and growing a talent pipeline of diverse, bright young minds. We will work together to meet the moment and lead our industry forward.”
“Peter has played an invaluable role in articulating ULI’s mission priorities and steering the organization at a time of immense volatility and economic uncertainty,” said Ron Pressman, ULI Global CEO. “I want to thank Peter for his contributions in helping us build a truly global organization, and I am delighted to have Diane lead this new chapter of ULI’s growth trajectory. As a pioneer and innovator at one of the world’s most influential design firms and a fierce promoter of sustainability and equity in real estate, she is uniquely equipped to guide the organization during this unprecedented period of change for the industry and create lasting change for the communities we serve.”
With over 46,000 members representing every sector of the real estate and land use industry in more than 80 countries, ULI is a leader in disseminating research and best practices for developing equitable and sustainable cities. In the year 2022-23, ULI has been leading conversations on building the business case for net zero through research from the Randall Lewis Center for Sustainability in Real Estate, the ULI Greenprint Center for Building Performance that tracks decarbonization efforts of the commercial real estate industry, and efforts like C Change in Europe. Additionally, the Terwilliger Center for Housing published dozens of reports, including the 2022 Home Attainability Index in both the Americas and Asia Pacific regions, and convened expert panels and advisory groups to discuss current housing challenges for communities worldwide. Finally, through awards, competitions, and programs like ULI Learning and UrbanPlan, ULI is uniquely positioned to engage young people and aspiring real estate leaders at any stage in their career to take part in immersive experiences and learn the fundamental forces that affect design and development in our communities.
