The Urban Land Institute (ULI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit research and education organization supported by its members. ULI Triangle was established as a district council of ULI and has approximately 750 members across the region, a staff of 2 and annual budget of $400,000. ULI Triangle plays a pivotal role in convening private and public partners to stimulate dialogue and share knowledge about complex land use issues in order to have a positive impact on the region’s growth and development.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Executive Director is the lead staff of ULI Triangle, and is responsible for overseeing the district council’s varied programs of work, developing and executing strategies, managing the district council and its organizational resources, and building relationships across community partners and a diverse membership. The programs this role oversees and directs include impact initiatives, membership, sponsorship, communications and marketing, and general management of operations.
This is a full-time exempt position reporting to the Vice President, District Councils, in the Corporate Office, with a dotted line to the Chair of the District Council. The Executive Director is a results-oriented and entrepreneurial leader with excellent organizational and management skills, a skilled communicator, relationship builder, and strategic thinker, who can also drill down to the details and produce exceptional outcomes.
This position requires local travel to events and sometimes to ULI’s Corporate Office in Washington, D.C.; and travel to the annual Fall Meeting, Spring Meeting, and ULI Summer Leadership Retreat in various locations across the Americas. Meetings, events, and programs may be in the early mornings or evenings.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Working collaboratively with the District Council Chair, Governance and Management Committees, and Advisory Board, formulate and execute on the business and strategic plans to define priorities and program objectives and outcomes as well as methods to measure success in achieving them.
- Develop and implement strategies that foster collaboration throughout the Institute and its various departments to support and enhance ULI Triangle’s program of work, including collaborative efforts with other organizations as well as regional multi-District Council Initiatives (e.g. annual Carolinas Meeting and initiative councils).
- Continually build and maintain ongoing collaborative relationships with local real estate companies in order to execute comprehensive membership, education, impact and fundraising strategies.
- Direct the planning and implementation of the district council’s program of work, including: programs and events throughout the region focused on real estate trends, sustainability/smart growth, housing, infrastructure, and capital markets; leadership initiatives (Diversity & Inclusion, Young Leaders, and Women’s Leadership Institute); local technical advisory panels (TAPs)
- Direct the Membership Committee in the formulation of new strategies and outreach campaigns for ULI awareness, membership growth and retention.
- Develop and maintain key external strategic alliances with other local professional associations, academic institutions, public sector officials, and nonprofit organizations.
- Direct all communications vehicles: email marketing, website, e-newsletter, and other communication vehicles.
- Establish ULI standard systems and procedures and maintain ongoing administrative reporting and relations with corporate headquarters.
- In collaboration with the Chair, organize, plan, and prepare the necessary agenda for all leadership meetings.
- Develop, refine, and implement a comprehensive sponsorship program that engages the Sponsorship Committee in securing financial support to sustain the district council’s activities. Prepare and manage the annual budget and finances.
- Manage and develop team members and oversee contractors hired as external support partners.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in organizational or non-profit management, association management, and fundraising/relationship management. Real estate or land use background is a plus.
- Ability to travel locally and within North America required.
- Ability to deal effectively with myriad issues from big-picture to detailed project management and to effectively prioritize efforts.
- Ability to deal effectively with people at all levels, including but not limited to corporate leaders, politicians, educators, public officials, etc.
- Experience in the preparation and monitoring of annual budget and financial statements; proven fiscal responsibility.
- Knowledge of consensus building and the ability to depoliticize sensitive issues; a forward thinker who can resolve issues before they occur.
- Proven track record in strategic planning and execution of sound business plans.
- Ability to communicate at all levels openly and effectively in both oral and written form.
- Highest level of honesty and integrity.
- Ability to maintain and respect confidentiality where and when appropriate.
- Highly motivated professional who thrives in a team environment; is multitask-oriented; is self-motivated; and takes pride in his/her accomplishments.
- Computer/internet savvy and proficient in Microsoft products; ability to learn multiple software platforms used for email marketing, member management, reports, and website management.
- Ability to work and manage teams remotely.
