In 2015, the ULI Women’s Leadership Initiative awarded Urban Innovation Grants to four District and National Councils to support the creation of innovative programs that raise the visibility and number of women in ULI and the real estate industry.
One of the District Councils to receive this grant was ULI Southeast Florida/Caribbean. The Grant of $2,500 was used to help fund the January 2016 program ULI Explores Miami’s Evolution through Art, Architecture, and Culture. Held at the edgy M Building in Wynwood, speakers explored how art, architecture, open space, and cultural facilities are transforming neighborhoods.
The panel included key players in architecture and design on how their innovations are positioning Miami as an emerging 21st century city. The panelists were Claudia Busch of Berenblum Busch Architecture, Adriana Savino-Miller of Savino-Miller Design Studio, and Margi Nothard of Glavovic Studio, and was moderated by Cheryl Jacobs of AIA Miami/MCAD. Each speaker brought unique perspective to the discussion, using examples of successful projects that blend art and design to create more sustainable places. The District Council was successful in strengthening their female membership by identifying and targeting specific women in real estate who were not current ULI members and invited them to attend the event.
Through strong programming and the attraction of top female speakers, three new female members were also added to the ULI Southeast Florida/Caribbean Advisory Board. Joining the board are Susie Dwinell, Executive Director of Crystal & Company, Heather Hetherington, Senior Marketing Coordinator/Associate of Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc. and Verity Mosquera, Research & Consulting Manager of Colliers International. All three female members personify the spirit of community and bring talent, diversity, expertise, and energy to the local ULI Advisory Board District Council.
Applications for the 2016 WLI Urban Innovation Grants are available to all District and National Councils and are due September 16. Click here to find more information on how to apply.
