WASHINGTON (October 31, 2012) – The Urban Land Institute (ULI), a global research and education institute dedicated to responsible land use and creating sustainable communities, has appointed Kathleen B. Carey as executive vice president and chief content officer. Ms. Carey joins ULI from GE Capital Real Estate (GECRE), where she has served as a senior vice president since 2001, including ten years as the global leader of GECRE’s Six Sigma initiative, the highly regarded business strategy for process improvement and project management.

Carey joins the staff of ULI with knowledge of and experience with the organization, having been a member for over seven years, including service for the past five years as a council member on the Urban Development Mixed Use Council (UDMUC). The founder, steering committee chair and executive committee chair of ULI’s Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI), Carey has also been at the forefront of raising the involvement and visibility of women in the real estate industry.

As the chief content officer at ULI, Carey will be responsible for the strategic direction and development of all of the institute’s content, as well as the implementation of its program of work, including oversight of all of the research centers and initiatives. Carey brings to ULI over twenty years of experience in the commercial real estate sector as well as market-leading operational and management skills gained from over 15 years of working for GE.

Carey joined GE in 1996 and rose to the office of president of GE Capital Investment Advisors (“GECIA”), a $2 billion investment advisory firm within GECRE. After the successful sale of GECIA, she became the global Six Sigma leader for the $90 billion GECRE business. In 2008, in light of Carey’s strong leadership credentials and her expertise in process design and improvement, she was asked to join GECRE’s Global Investment Management Company and became the group’s chief operating officer, while continuing to serve as GECRE’s Six Sigma Leader.

Carey began her career as an attorney and served as a partner in the Connecticut based law firm of Cummings & Lockwood. She is licensed to practice law in New York, Connecticut and California.
