A world-class championship venue in the heart of a competitive sports community, The Podium is a signature athletic facility contributing to city vibrancy and regional economy. The Podium sits in a remarkable natural urban setting on a riverside cliff and waterfall in the heart of downtown Spokane, near the site of historic native fishing grounds later developed as an industrial area and railroad hub. Selection as the host city for the Expo ’74 World’s Fair compelled clean-up of the city’s south riverfront as an event campus, recently revitalized as a spectacular riverfront park. The Podium kicked off as a Progressive-Design-Build endeavor in 2018, breaking ground in December 2019. The construction timeline overcame many challenges including blasting 30,000 cubic yards of basalt rock, Covid-19 restrictions, and shutdowns due to civil unrest. Completed in November 2021, the venue opened in December 2021 and soon after hosted the Lilac Grand Prix track event where a world record was set securing the venue as an award-winning destination.
The Podium is designed to attract events other venues can’t and to meet the architectural standard of nearby cultural venues, while appealing to a youthful sports community. Built to host a variety of sports, community activities, and concerts, it features a convertible multi-sport floor, with 4,200 seats. The Podium emulates the athletes it was built for—strong and efficient. Rather than a big gray box, thoughtful gestures like rotating building axis on the site, window insertions and perforated metal siding panels, bright colors, mixed materials and angles, impart a welcoming presence. Inside, the structure’s clean lines keep events the focus of attention. A massive sloping roof is supported by conventional steel framing, with trusses spanning 245’ providing unobstructed site lines inside.
The field house includes a 75,000sf competition floor, with a marquee 200-meter hydraulically banked track able to accommodate numerous sports. The upper floor includes a press box, timing suite, and VIP viewing area. The lower floor features a warm-up track, medical and training facilities, and management offices. A dining space with high ceilings and large windows opens to a covered outdoor terrace from which to enjoy one of the best city views from the North Bank district. The Podium’s contributions include complementing its unique riverfront site in the heart of a city, providing first-in-class sports amenities and the community benefit it offers as an entertainment asset and economic contributor.
