Transportation for America released a free guidebook in August intended to help communities locate and implement non-traditional financing strategies for transit improvements. Despite a 50-year high in demand for public transit in the US due to modern demographic shifts, the federal government has less to offer in terms of funding for transit. “Thinking Outside the Farebox” provides examples of transit success stories from across the country which utilized innovative financing, rather than traditional federal funding, to pay for the planning, construction, and operations of bus and rail lines, station improvements, and other transit projects. The guidebook also helps readers navigate the bureaucracy of TIFIA, TIGER, and RRIF grant programs, public-private-partnerships, special taxing districts, and more.
