Station Center in California’s Union City is part of a project unique for the San Francisco Bay area: the transformation of an underused 105-acre site into a vibrant mixed-use, transit-oriented city center where residents of all income levels can live, work, shop, and play.

Located on 2.2 acres across the street from the Union City BART station in the heart of the intermodal Station District, Station Center was designed by David Baker + Partners with 157 units of affordable housing for low-income working families or individuals. The project also includes 8,600 square feet of commercial space, community gardens, a pool, a children’s play area, and a community center.

Building features that enabled Station Center to achieve LEED Platinum certification include solar-heated water, a stormwater capture and treatment system, and energy-efficient appliances. The property, which has a large courtyard for residential use, sits alongside the city’s newly constructed Promenade, which has a large landscaped public walkway and a large playground that caters to children of all ages. Station Center aims to become a model for sustainable affordable housing.
