Why Santa Monica Place?
Santa Monica Place transcends conventional wisdom about the adaptive reuse of retail, creating a new paradigm in mall revitalization to serve as a model for transformation of urban retail centers across the US. The renewed Santa Monica Place replaces an under-utilized enclosed mall with a new dynamic district that celebrates the cultural and geographic openness of Santa Monica, CA. Located on 10 acres just two blocks from the ocean and historic Santa Monica Pier in the heart of the seaside city, the project maximizes the site’s potential with an open-air footprint that connects on all four sides with the surrounding community, extends the famous Third Street Promenade, and delivers urban experiences within approximately 524,000 SF that includes new land use concepts, including a dramatic upper level Dining Deck that redefines communal gathering space, and The Market and True Food Kitchen, both opening in 2011 as innovative Food & Beverage concepts to the area. The project achieved approvals at every level after going through an extensive community outreach and entitlement process in the City of Santa Monica.
