Energy Transition
The energy transition is transforming how we power our world, with a growing shift toward renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydro. Green power procurement is now essential for organizations aiming to reduce carbon emissions and meet sustainability goals.
But as more renewable energy enters the grid, new challenges arise. Wind and solar are intermittent by nature, which can create imbalances in supply and demand. Ensuring grid reliability during this shift is critical. Without careful coordination, the push for cleaner energy could lead to instability, inefficiencies, or increased costs.
Therefore, ULI’s Decarbonization Program is convening electric utilities and real estate leaders in U.S. markets to build cross-sector collaboration and advance green power procurement. As real estate firms set decarbonization goals for net zero carbon operations, renewable energy is proving to be an increasingly important part of the journey to achieve it. On-site renewables only get buildings so far and off-site PPAs can be quite complicated – sourcing green power directly from the utility could help real estate meet its net zero goals in streamlined way, at scale.
These events will focus on bridging the language gap between the two sectors, understanding existing barriers to procurement, and brainstorming solutions that are mutually beneficial for both real estate and utility providers in green power procurement.
Upcoming Convenings
New York City, New York – Monday, September 22, 2025
Invite only. Please email [email protected] if you are a New York-based utility or real estate developer looking to attend.
Past Convenings
Nashville, Tennessee – Monday, February 3, 2025
Hosted by ULI in Nashville, the convening was attended by local and national real estate developers as well as representative from the Nashville Electric Service, which serves customers in Tennessee and the broader Southeast. The convening cemented the importance of not only utilities increasing data-sharing and transparency but also for the real estate industry to be open to utility priorities in green power procurement.
Denver, Colorado – Thursday, November 16, 2023
Hosted by LBA Realty at Denver Place, the convening was attended by local and national real estate leaders, as well as representatives from Xcel Energy, which serves customers in Colorado as well as seven other states across the country. It was clear that convening this diverse group of stakeholders was key, as an attendee noted, “for the most part, real estate doesn’t speak utility, and the utility doesn’t speak real estate.”
