ULI/Randall Lewis Health Mentorship Program

Health Mentors and Mentees at ULI’s Fall Meeting in Chicago, IL

The ULI/Randall Lewis Health Mentorship Program allows students to learn about ULI, develop relationships with ULI members, and deepen their understanding of opportunities to advance health through careers in the land use industry. The program pairs exceptional current graduate students with ULI members working at the intersection of health and the built environment. It is generously supported by ULI Trustee Randall Lewis and organized by the ULI Building Healthy Places Initiative.

Benefits, Goals and Opportunities for Students
  • Develop relationships with ULI members working at the intersection of health, real estate, and land use, and other graduate students interested in this topic
  • Deepen your understanding of connections between health and land use, and ULI’s work in this area
  • Learn about ULI more broadly, and the breadth of learning and networking opportunities available to members
  • Join a group of other rising leaders in the health and built environment field
  • Attend ULI’s Fall and Spring Meetings, with all expenses covered

Selected student mentees will be granted to the following opportunities:

1. Complimentary registration and travel support to:

  • ULI’s Spring Meeting
  • ULI’s Fall Meeting
  • The Randall Lewis/Building Healthy Places Forum or similar health-related programming at both meetings
  • One Product Council meeting at both meetings

2. Support for professional development opportunities:

  • A one year ULI student membership
  • Mentorship from a ULI member, whose projects or efforts work to improve health through the built environment
  • Connection to the Health Mentors Alumni Network to build relationships between students and professionals working at the intersection of health and the built environment
  • Publication of their photos, short biographies, and written reflections on the ULI website

Mentee Selection

Up to five students will be selected through a competitive process. The ideal candidate will:

  • Be an outstanding graduate student, currently enrolled in an accredited graduate program in real estate, architecture, urban planning, public health or a related field (full or part time)
  • Be passionate about improving health through land use and the built environment and driven to address this in their future careers
  • Show a demonstrated commitment to or understanding of advancing health equity
  • Show potential to serve as strong champions or ambassadors of health in their future professional lives
  • Show an interest in learning and networking opportunities provided by ULI

The ULI Building Healthy Places Initiative is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion. Applications from people of color, women, persons with disabilities, and people who identify as LGBTQ+ are warmly encouraged.

Opportunities for ULI Members

Selected member mentors will be granted the following opportunities: 

1. Receive complimentary registration to attend:

  • ULI’s Spring Meeting
  • ULI’s Fall Meeting
  • The Randall Lewis/Building Healthy Places Forum or similar health-related programming at both meetings

2. Be paired with a graduate student for a full-year mentorship focused on improving health through the built environment. ULI members will engage with the student mentee through:

  • Calls with the student in advance of Spring and Fall Meetings for introductions and to share suggestions on priority programming.
  • Meeting with the student in-person at Spring and Fall Meetings to provide career advice and industry knowledge.
  • Hosting the student at Spring and Fall Meeting Product Council meetings, receptions, dinners, etc.
  • Participating in full cohort programming and conversations
  • Staying in touch with the student after the program, as desired
