General Calendar and Deadlines

The ULI Hines Student Competition is conducted in three stages.

Stage 1: Applications

October 16 to December 4, 2017

All student teams that wish to participate in the ULI Hines Student Competition must submit an application showing that the team meets the criteria for interdisciplinary participation. ULI reserves the right to disqualify teams or to limit the number of participating teams. Review the eligibility requirements of the ULI Hines Student Competition.

  • The application system opens on October 16, 2017
  • Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. PST on December 4, 2017.
  • All teams will be notified by e-mail no later than December 18, 2017, confirming their eligibility to participate.

Teams deemed ineligible typically have an opportunity to work nimbly with ULI staff after submitting credentials to change their team composition, correct documentation errors, or provide missing documentation in order to qualify.

Stage 2: Competition

January 15−29, 2018

Each team develops a response to the urban design and development problem posed by the Competition.

The Competition will kick off at 7 a.m. PST, January 15, 2018, when instructions for accessing the online project briefing materials will be e-mailed to all team leaders and team e-mail addresses. The briefing materials will include a comprehensive problem statement, background information about the site, market information, any relevant existing design proposals, maps, and other information. Teams will also be given a list of required presentation materials.

All proposals submitted to ULI must have an e-mail time and date stamp that is no later than 11:00 p.m. PST on January 29, 2018.

The jury will meet in February to choose four finalist teams, plus honorable mention teams.

Stage 3: Finalist Preparation and Presentation

March and April 2018

Finalist teams will have the opportunity to expand their original proposals and respond in more detail to the problem posed by the Competition.

In March, ULI will pay for one member of each finalist team to travel to the site location and meet with local experts in order to revise and enhance their proposal. Other members of the team are also encouraged to attend.

In April, ULI will pay for all the members of the finalist teams to travel to the site to participate in a mandatory dress rehearsal in front of an advisory jury of local experts. The following day, each team will present to the full jury, ULI guests, students, and others in a public event. That day will culminate in the announcement of the winner.
