2022 ULI Hines Student Competition Winner: "The Stack" – The University of Texas at Austin

“The Stack supports three pillars: health, culture and connection. This LEED Platinum, transit-oriented development creates a thriving, diverse and integrated community reflective of Oakland’s culture and is a catalyst for uplifting the city’s vulnerable residents. The Stack’s ambitious proposal transforms the area into a cultural and transit hub with a mission-driven, mixed-use program that drives positive social change for Oakland.”

2022 ULI Hines Student Competition Finalist: "Konstellation" – Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University

“Constellations bring together far apart stars to tell a story that informs, inspires, and guides. Through integrative site design and equitable community services, Konstellation seeks to create a connected and cohesive neighborhood that reflects the broad history and culture of Old Oakland.”

2022 ULI Hines Student Competition Finalist: "LINKUP OAKLAND" – Georgia Institute of Technology

“Fueled by Downtown Oakland’s long history of social inequities, racial injustice and the resultant fractured development, LINKUP OAKLAND strives to become a pilot intervention in reenforcing the dots [historically significant and culturally imbued sites for Downtown Oakland] and reestablishing the links for an equitable, inclusive and well-connected Oakland. We envision our dots to strengthen the links of historical importance, allow for cultural diversity, strive for ecological sustainability, and become an economic backbone for the whole of Oakland.”

2022 ULI Hines Student Competition Finalist: "JUST OAKLAND" – Harvard University

“Just Oakland places equity at the center of the design to reframe the relationship of divisive infrastructures with the black community. The freeway is reframed as an urban commons that connects the neighborhood and activates the site to become a resource center and place for justice. The mixed-use development is anchored by cultural expression, affordable housing and health that drive the growth of the site as a model for marginalized neighborhoods.”

2022 ULI Hines Student Competition Honorable Mention: "The VIBE" – University of California, Berkeley

“The VIBE is a mixed-use, mixed-income community development located right in the heart of the city of Oakland. Just minutes from Downtown Oakland and Jack London Square, the site is optimally located to reforge connectivity and spark a vibrant mix of homes, uses, and artistry to Oakland’s core.”

2022 ULI Hines Student Competition Honorable Mention: "Tapestry" – University of Miami

“Tapestry brings a new vision to Old Oakland building on the multi-layered history still present
in its Victorian architecture. Once a terminus for the mixed history of an innovative rail system that also served as a place of new hope for freed slaves, Tapestry meets the future as a dynamic live/work district. With 40% affordable housing, Tapestry integrates building types and uses to establish a diverse and healthy community through Connectivity & Culture, Sustainability, and Community.”

2022 ULI Hines Student Competition Honorable Mention: "The Stitch" – University of Cincinnati

“Perfectly stitching together the City of Oakland’s unique urban fabric, The Stitch is a mixed income, mixed use community seeking to build connections servicing the Greater Oakland Area through establishing the Old Oakland neighborhood as a key node in the city’s transportation infrastructure and cultural fabric Through building a transit hub that connects the community to the surrounding region, maintaining critical elements of Oakland’s diverse history and integrating them into the built environment, and creating green community spaces that facilitate human and ecological connections, the proposed development will culminate in a living experience that benefits workers, residents, and visitors as they seek to enjoy Oakland.”

2022 ULI Hines Student Competition Honorable Mention: "CIRCUIT" – Cornell University

“The CIRCUIT connects and redevelops Old Oakland with a distinct focus on bringing tourists and entrepreneurs together into Oakland’s downtown area. With the 7th Street “Art Corridor”, central commercial area, and a new BART station, visitors and investors, who have been attracted to Old Oakland, will bring development and employment opportunities into this area. Combined with climate alleviation, sustainability, and adaptation, the CIRCUIT transforms Old Oakland into a constantly vibrant and diverse community.”

2022 ULI Hines Student Competition Honorable Mention: "Scion" – University of Pennsylvania

“Scion is a dynamic community connecting Old Oakland to Jack London, Chinatown, and the entire Bay Area. The project seeks to transform a mono-functional area adjacent to a highway that severs the older part of town from the waterfront, into an attractive destination, creating a mixed use destination emblematic of the city’s progressive values and diversity, while taking advantage and character of the adjacent neighborhoods.”

“Roots strives to reclaim the heart of Oakland by creating an inclusive and vibrant urban space that is accessible and equitable for all. The Old Oakland area is deeply rooted in culture, and Roots aims to incorporate spaces of remembrance for the former residents, along with cultural, creative, and resourceful hubs to support its existing population and future growth.”

2022 ULI Hines Student Competition Honorable Mention: "MOSAIC" – Ryerson University, University of Toronto, & University of Miami

“Mosaic creates a complete community at the junction of Oakland’s distinctive historic neighborhoods, honoring their diversity through its four foundational principles – Affordability, Community, Connectivity, and Sustainability. Building on this unique site, Mosaic restitches the urban fabric through an enhanced public realm and a network of open green space. The resulting transit-oriented development provides a mix of mobility and housing options with related community services to establish a new neighborhood and landmark destination.”

“Our project is a layered development plan that aspires to create an enabling environment in ten years to ultimately realize a vision set forth today by President Biden’s Infrastructure Bill to ‘Seize the Freeway’ as an act of reparation to those displaced, oppressed, harmed, and made victims of injustice.”
