WASHINGTON (December 1, 2016) – The Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) global efforts to create communities that are sustainable, prosperous and livable are documented in the Institute’s latest annual report, which includes accomplishments during fiscal year 2016 (July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016).

The report shows ULI’s continued success as an organization that is highly influential and effective as a land use thought leader at the local and global levels. The depth and breadth of the organization is demonstrated by numerous achievements — ranging from membership growth to results-oriented activities – each of which reflects an increased emphasis on member engagement and leadership opportunities in each of the regions in which the organization has a presence – the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific. ULI’s accomplishments in FY 2016 include:

• An increase in global membership to nearly 40,000 – the highest level achieved since the Great Recession, with membership increases in all regions;
• A new regional structure to create a more resilient, diverse and durable organization with broader geographic reach and more tightly connected member networks, and which is resulting in stronger member involvement around the globe;
• Successful major convenings in the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific that drew record numbers of attendees and dynamic speakers who reinforced ULI’s position as a global authority on land use and real estate;
• High demand for ULI’s Advisory Services Program, which advised 13 cities in the U.S. and one city in China on how to become more vibrant and sustainable;
• An expansion of the Building Healthy Places initiative to include a focus on transforming obsolete commercial strips into healthy, attractive corridors, and to highlight access to healthy food as a community amenity that adds value and appeal;
• The introduction of UrbanPlan — ULI’s high school and undergraduate planning and design course — in the UK, where it reached more than 500 students in 24 state schools across the country;
• New research from the Terwilliger Center for Housing on preserving and developing affordable housing to raise awareness of housing as a critical component of sustainable communities; and
• Reductions in carbon emissions and energy consumption by commercial buildings in the United States, Europe and Asia, as documented by the Greenprint Center for Building Performance.
