Tax Increment Financing: Tweaking TIF for the 21st Century (Urban Land May/June 2014: 102-106; UrbanLand online, June 9, 2014). After the recession, governments across the United States—including in Atlanta, Chicago, and California—rethought TIF.

After Redevelopment: New Tools and Strategies to Promote Economic Development and Build Sustainable Communities. After California’s governor ended the state’s redevelopment program, ULI’s five California District Councils set to work on next generation policies for redevelopment. Their report recommends a comprehensive set of tools and offers food for thought nationally, as well as for California.
ULI Minnesota, working with the Regional Council of Mayors, followed through on the Reinvesting in the Region action plan by producing the (Re)Development-Ready Guide. The guide provides a straightforward checklist tool for local governments.
ULI Southeast Florida/Caribbean highlights its frequent partnerships with members of the Florida Redevelopment Association, noting the FRA’s case studies and toolbox for redevelopment.
Many of the recent case studies in ULI’s revamped development case studies program include redevelopment projects and TIF:
- Harper Court: The city of Chicago, University of Chicago, and private partners teamed up to revitalize this strategic commercial location.
- Sullivan Center: A historic department store complex in Chicago’s loop is renovated and repositioned.
- Via Verde: A mixed-income residential development revitalizes a former brownfield site in the Bronx.
- Riverfront Park: A mixed-use, planned community rises adjacent to downtown Denver.
- Woodward’s: Vancouver’s historic Woodward’s department store becomes a new community of residences, retail, offices, and educational facilities.
