The ULI Building Healthy Places Initiative (BHP) works to engage, inform, and inspire ULI members and partners to do more to advance health.

Health and Real Estate at ULI’s Fall Meeting

The 2018 ULI Fall Meeting, to be held in Boston on October 8–11, will provide many opportunities to examine health and real estate through several events and sessions, including the following:

  • Randall Lewis/Building Healthy Places Interest Forum | Monday, October 8, 2018 | 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. | Limited Capacity
    The eighth Building Healthy Places Interest Forum is open to all ULI members attending the Fall Meeting in Boston. The forum will focus on sharing information about Boston-based projects at the intersection of health and the built environment and applying lessons from these projects to the work of forum participants from across the country.   • Open Space Case Lunch | Tuesday, October 9, 2018 | 12:00 p.m.– 1:00 p.m. | Limited Capacity
    The ULI Building Healthy Places Initiative and the ULI Sustainable Development Council will discuss the findings of a new research report, The Open Space Case. The report examines the benefits of real estate sector involvement in creating, maintaining, operating, and programming parks and open space. The lunch is open to all Fall Meeting registrants on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Agrihoods: Emerging Best Practices | Thursday, October 11, 2018 | 4:00 p.m.– 4:30 p.m. | Open Event
    Agrihoods are residential or mixed-use developments built with a working farm or garden as a focal point. At this informal session, learn about new ULI research on agrihoods, why they are a growing trend, and best practices for agrihood development. This session is open to all Fall Meeting attendees.

ULI Health Leaders Share Reflections on Health and Land Use

ULI Health Leaders—a group of designers, real estate experts, urban planners, health professionals, and community developers—shared a range of “a-ha moments” that highlighted when they first grasped how the built environment and community design played a significant role in promoting health outcomes. New Advisory Services Reports Focus on Healthy Places

With support from the Colorado Health Foundation, ULI hosted a series of Advisory Services panels that focused on developing healthy places in communities across Colorado. The following reports are now available: Southeast Colorado Springs, CO; Commerce City, CO; City of Greeley, CO; and Montbello, CO. These reports contain strategic recommendations for building thriving, healthy, and safe places to live using a health-equity lens.

Growing Interest in Healthy Buildings

In case you missed it, ULI recently released The Business Case for Healthy Buildings: Insights from Early Adopters, a report that explores growing interest in building for health and achieving wellness certifications to give developments a competitive edge. District councils around the United States are providing members with opportunities to attend local tours and events on healthy buildings. Learn more.
