Mary Burkholder is Associate Principal of BAE Urban Economics and leads the firm’s Washington, DC office. She joined BAE in September 2017 after a 20+ year career in planning and community and economic development in the public, private and non-profit sectors.
Immediately prior to joining BAE, Mary was Senior Vice President of the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation in Annapolis, MD where she led the agency’s business development program. She also served in senior positions with the Local Initiatives Support Corporation in New York, NY; the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, ZHA, Inc., and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs.
Past projects include serving as Anne Arundel County’s project manager for the Odenton MARC Station transit-oriented development, preparing a real estate assessment of City-owned properties for the City of Baltimore Department of Planning and market analyses for two key projects in Washington, DC, Union Station and Gallery Place. She has also prepared economic development strategies for Hyattsville, MD; Wilmington, NC and York County, PA.
BAE work assignments have included an analysis of potential redevelopment sites in Alexandria, VA, an analysis of the area housing market as part of a Comprehensive Master Strategic Plan for the Chesapeake Redevelopment and Housing Authority in Chesapeake, VA, an economic impact analysis of Amazon HQ2 in Arlington, VA; economic development strategies for South Fulton, GA and Baltimore, MD and a market and fiscal analyses of Annapolis, MD.
Mary earned a Master of Community Planning degree from the University of Maryland and has a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Michigan. After years of working in economic and community development nationally, she became interested in public health and in addressing health inequities. Accordingly, she decided to pursue a Master of Public Health from the University of Maryland in 2017 and will complete are MPH degree requirements in May 2021.
