WASHINGTON (March 3, 2016) – The Urban Land Institute (ULI), a global research and education institute dedicated to responsible land use and creating thriving, sustainable communities, has appointed Kathleen B. Carey as president and chief executive officer of the ULI Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Institute that supports ULI’s programs, services and activities.

In her new role, Carey will oversee all fundraising activities for ULI and the ULI Foundation, the Foundation’s Annual Fund, the Foundation Governors program, ULI’s work with philanthropic grantors and partners, its sponsorship efforts in support of ULI’s global meetings, and the Institute’s corporate partners program. She will continue to be actively involved in the development of ULI’s overall program of work.

The position, previously held by ULI’s Global Chief Executive Officer Patrick Phillips, represents a promotion for Carey, who since October 2012 has served on ULI’s staff as executive vice president and chief content officer. In that capacity, she has overseen the research and programming produced by all of the Institute’s centers and initiatives, including the Building Healthy Places initiative, Center for Sustainability, Leadership Center, Capital Markets Center, and Terwilliger Center for Housing. As chief content officer, she has also supervised ULI’s advisory services, real estate education, and awards programs. Each of these areas within ULI’s overall program of work is supported by gifts to the ULI Foundation, which has a corpus of $36 million. She will begin the Foundation post on April 1, 2016.

The ULI Foundation, which celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2015, has long supported ULI as a philanthropic organization. However, the portion of ULI’s program of work funded by the Foundation has risen substantially over the past few years. The increasing importance of the Foundation’s role to ULI necessitated the creation of a full-time president and chief executive officer for the Foundation, Phillips said. “Kathleen is a proven, results-oriented executive, uniquely positioned to match ULI’s mission and content priorities to strong support from our members and partners,” he said. “This role with the Foundation is critical in advancing ULI’s mission. Kathleen’s strong skill set, combined with her knowledge of the organization, make her an excellent choice for the job.”

Prior to joining ULI’s staff, Carey was a senior vice president at GE Capital Real Estate (GECRE), including ten years of service as the global leader of GECRE’s Six Sigma initiative, the highly regarded business strategy for process improvement and project management. She was a ULI member for more than seven years, including service as a council member on the Urban Development Mixed Use Council (UDMUC). She also is the founding member and inaugural chair of ULI’s Women’s Leadership Initiative (WLI), which seeks to raise the number and visibility of women in the real estate industry.
