ULI Foundation Supports Institute’s Mission-Driven Work to Create Thriving Communities Worldwide

WASHINGTON (November 5, 2018) – J. Phillip Horne, former Chief Development Officer of George Washington University’s Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, has been selected as the Chief Advancement Officer for the Urban Land Institute (ULI) Foundation. Horne brings to the Foundation more than 25 years of experience within the intersections of private enterprise, education, philanthropy, and public service.

ULI is a global real estate organization with more than 42,000 members dedicated to advancing the Institute’s mission, which is to provide leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities worldwide. The ULI Foundation, now in its 48^th year, provides philanthropic support for ULI’s mission-focused programs, such as activities from its Terwilliger Center for Housing, Center for Sustainability and Economic Performance and Center for Capital Markets and Real Estate; ULI’s Advisory Services Program, which assists communities worldwide with complex challenges related to urban growth and development; and UrbanPlan, the Institute’s popular urban design and development curriculum offered to high school and undergraduate students, as well as public officials.

The support long provided by the Foundation for these programs and other community-changing work is being further strengthened by ULI’s Global Strategic Plan, which seeks to deliver greater member value through technology investments to improve member connections and involvement with ULI; strengthen and broaden ULI’s member networks; and encourage more philanthropic giving to expand ULI’s reach. The Foundation will play a fundamental role in realizing the strategic vision of the Institute by inspiring members’ philanthropy to support ULI’s measurable and transformative impact offerings worldwide. In addition to Advisory Services and UrbanPlan, the Strategic Plan envisions heightened support for work carried out through its member networks in each of the three regions where ULI has a presence – the Americas, Europe and Asia.

As the ULI Foundation Chief Advancement Officer, Horne will be leading the largest fundraising campaign in ULI’s 82-year history. “I am excited to join the ULI Foundation,” Horne said. “Strengthening the Foundation’s support for ULI will help the Institute advance its mission through economic cycles and transformative times for the real estate industry. This is a wonderful opportunity to help effect positive change through ULI members’ work.”

Horne comes to ULI with decades of varied experiences across philanthropy, non-profit management, economic development, and investment advisory services. His experience includes senior leadership of best in class advancement programs in substantial, complex education and research institutions; significant success in donor cultivation; planning and executing comprehensive philanthropic campaigns; investment advisor and broker with special emphasis in structured real estate and tax equity.

At George Washington University, Horne has served as the Chief Development Officer for the largest constituent unit of the university, developing and executing strategies for achieving programmatic and financial objectives of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences. He also has provided leadership, mentorship, and management for a team of external relations professionals, and achieved three of the highest consecutive years of fundraising attainment in the college’s history.
