September 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. Founded as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 under President Lyndon Johnson, President Ronald Reagan enacted public law in 1988 to celebrate a 30-day Hispanic Heritage Month. September 15 also marks the independence of five Central American countries­—Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence day on September 16 and 18, respectively.
