ULI Building Healthy Places Film Club | July 18-28, 2022

(the new) “West Side Story” & New York

Explore the fascinating real-world story behind San Juan Hill, the lost neighborhood composed largely of Black New Yorkers where ‘West Side Story’ is set. Film Club participants are invited to watch Stephen Spielberg's version of the film on their own and assemble for a post-film discussion led by Julia Foulkes, professor of history and author of “A Place for Us: ‘West Side Story’ and New York”. Virtual thought prompts sent via email will help guide viewers as they watch the film.

    • Viewing Kickoff, July 18 | Participants will receive a Film Club 101 email outlining how the Film Club will work.
    • Screening Guide | Author Julia Foulkes will offer observations and questions to guide your screening.
    • Post-Film Discussion, July 28, 4 pm ET via Zoom | After watch the film on their own, participants will assemble for a group discussion led by Julia Foulkes, professor of history and author of “A Place for Us: ‘West Side Story’ and New York”

The ULI Building Healthy Places Book & Film Club is made possible by the generous support of ULI Foundation Governor Randall Lewis.
