We are pleased to continue the learning, collegiality and collaboration of ULI’s Small Scale Developer Forums in 2019!  Join us for our 14th Forum, to be held in Baltimore, MD, May 20-21, 2019. Rich in architectural diversity, fine grained urbanism, and a rapidly regenerating urban core, Baltimore provides an opportunity to explore similar lessons to what we saw in Detroit and Pittsburgh. Our program theme – When Opportunity Abounds – will look at the discipline and skills honed by local developers to not overpay and ensure their deals work in a slow growth economy.  We will also be exploring the much anticipated, but still unclear promise of Opportunity Zone legislation, which Baltimore is taking an active role in harnessing.

Starting from our base at the Kimpton Monaco Hotel, Monday will include an introduction to the City, panel conversations and a walking tour of the historic waterfront and downtown.  Day two will include skill sessions in finance and legal matters, and take us to other parts of the city where adaptive reuse and repurposing of industrial buildings, commercial high streets and re-generating neighborhoods is breathing new life into classic corners of the City.

Baltimore has so much building stock, available at such incredible prices, it hard to not just want to ‘buy an entire block’.  But these low cost/ high-risk neighborhoods require strong discipline and skill to ensure one does not over estimate market or redevelopment costs.

Jim Heid is a real estate developer and strategic development consultant focused on the tools and techniques that lead to a more sustainable built environment. In 2000, he founded UrbanGreen® to advise established real estate companies, legacy landowners and government agencies on how to develop real estate assets that foster community change while generating appropriate economic returns. Known for his aspirational but practical approach, he is valued for his ability to communicate the value of good design, within the realities of local market norms.

An active member of the Urban Land Institute since 1993, Jim has authored white papers and articles on sustainable design, resilience, responsible investment and small scale, incremental development. In 2011, Jim worked closely with ULI staff to create the Real Estate Entrepreneurs Program, which began as a series of Small Scale Development Forums, held around the country. To further the potential of this effort, in fall of 2015 he helped organize an unprecedented gathering of nine national organizations (ULI, CNU, NTBA, Locus, Preservation GreenLab, Strong Towns, National Main Streets, Incremental Development Alliance) to help align each groups’ collective efforts to promote small scale, incremental development as a practical tool for regenerating communities.

Today he is actively involved in three development projects focused on mixed use, small scale infill, and continues his role as adviser to legacy families and cities wanting to harness the power of incremental development to shape more sustainable neighborhoods.

Trained as a landscape architect, Jim received a Masters in Real Estate Development from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a way to more effectively integrate economics, development, and design thinking.

Nonmembers: $1,130

Registration fee includes continental breakfast, reception/dinner, luncheon, and refreshments.

Cancellations, which must be made in writing or email to ULI Customer Service, will be subject to a $100 administrative fee. Cancellations must be received at least seven days prior to the start of the workshop to be eligible for a refund. No refunds will be granted thereafter. You may, however, transfer your registration, without penalty, to another member of your organization.

Accommodations

Hotel accommodations are not included in the registration fee.
