In 2021, ULI Charlotte was one of five district councils selected to participate in the ULI Etkin Scholar Program. The program is designed to introduce college and university students with a real estate interest and degree focus to the resources available through ULI membership while integrating those students into the ULI path of learning. This program is made possible by the philanthropic support of Bruce Etkins and the John Porter Foundation.
In April 2024, ULI Charlotte graduated its third class of fourteen Etkin Scholars. Students in the program have come from UNC Charlotte, JCSU, Davidson College, UNC Greensboro, USC, CPCC, and Clemson University. Last year’s Charlotte Scholars had the opportunity to tour projects, attend the ULI Carolinas Meeting, meet local leaders, and learn about career options, industry trends, and challenges.

The ULI Etkin Scholars program has truly been the most transformative experience of my educational career. Having participated in the program for the last 2 years and graduating next month, I can safely say that I wouldn’t have the network and opportunities that I have today without this program.
(Coleson Elliott-UNC Charlotte)
Throughout my time in college, I’ve come to understand the diverse components that contribute to education and equip individuals for the transition into the professional world. The Urban Land Institute Etkin Scholar Program has played a vital role in my preparation. This program introduces you to all sectors of commercial real estate, even supporting careers, learning opportunities, and thousands of industry professionals through events, mentoring, and the ULI database. For those looking to gain practical experience and exposure in commercial real estate, involvement in the Etkin Scholar program or engagement with ULI, as a whole, is invaluable.
(Kaleigh Thomas- UNC Charlotte)
I joined this program with nothing but a passion for CRE and left it with a deeper knowledge of the industry, multiple conferences under my belt, a vast network, and an even deeper passion for CRE and the impact that it can make. The various site tours and conferences allowed me to learn from the best in the industry and experience the impact that commercial estate can make. The multitude of coffee chats that leaders were willing to take allowed me to grow my network and learn how to carry myself as a professional. Finally, the webinars, educational programs, and events allowed me to build the crucial skills needed to land a role in this industry. I wouldn’t be standing here today without all of the people who supported me through this program. Thank you!”
