Equitable Development Past Forums
Equitable Development is both difficult to define and one of the biggest trends in today’s real estate and land use markets. With that in mind, this forum seeks to find answers to the following:
- How can we factor social equity into projects from the very beginning?
- Is there a role for the real estate community to work with local governments to empower local residents?
- How are social issues impacting the built environment – what is the direction of causation?
- Can the built environment be used to mitigate social inequalities?
- What is causing the inequity and are there ways to avoid it while still pursuing redevelopment/reuse goals?

Equitable Development: From Principles to Practice
ULI is committed to Diversity Equity Inclusion. But does this commitment translate into development practice? In the past year, ULI has worked with industry leaders and experts to develop a document naming and describing ten principles for racial equity, as a first step to guide practitioners and municipalities. It is particularly important for our industry to engage with aspirational DEI goals given our history and given the possibilities of a future where the places we live work and play better reflect the needs and visions of our diverse communities.
The Equitable Development Forum invites practitioners to learn about and explore how these “Ten principles” can be applied through businesses partnerships, the culture of the workplace and in industry innovation and leadership. This session will begin with an an overview of the ten principles, then move to a virtual panel discussion and then follow with simultaneous smaller in-person and virtual breakout deeper dive discussions. Join us to build competency and comfort in equitable development.
This Forum will be both virtual and also in person at the ULI Spring Meeting in San Diego.
