The Edge is an ambitious office building designed for global financial firm, and main tenant, Deloitte in the Zuidas business district of Amsterdam. Combining numerous smart technologies in tandem to create an adaptable and intelligent working environment with an energy neutral structure, The Edge demonstrates that the pursuit of a vibrant and collaborative work environment can come together successfully while achieving the highest level of sustainability possible. The project incorporates 430,556.42 sq. ft. of office space with a 10,763.91 sq. ft. restaurant, a 3,229.17 sq. ft. cafe/restaurant open for the public, and a 1,076.39 sq. ft. fitness center. According to the Building Research Establishment, a global assessor of sustainable buildings, The Edge is the most sustainable office building in the world. The Edge uses 70% less electricity than comparable office buildings, often producing more energy than it uses. This is made possible by the implementation of 20,000 sensors providing an extremely accurate insight on the building’s usage, allowing the building areas to run on next to zero energy usage under no occupancy. An onsite app-interface allows users to steer or be sent to specific areas to occupy floors thus avoiding less cost efficient scattered usage. The Edge combines numerous smart & sustainable technologies in tandem to create an adaptable and intelligent working environment.
More than 15 IP-based systems, most used for the first time, are connected in a single web-based app, enabling the integration of the physical office world with the virtual in an easy-to-use manner. This along with flexible and social open workspaces is intended to ease the transition of the company into a single office building in the short term, while improving employee comfortability and efficiency in the long term.
