ULI’s 2017 Fall Meeting in Los Angeles featured a lively creative placemaking breakfast conversation, Creating Places We Love at the Intersection of Arts and Culture, Health, and Real Estate, with nearly 60 attendees.
At the breakfast discussion, ULI Senior Visiting Fellow for Creative Placemaking, Juanita Hardy joined Smart Growth America’s Director of Arts and Culture Ben Stone to put the spotlight on two ULI Creative Placemaking National Study Visits.
One National Study Visit, hosted by ULI Triangle, focused on leveraging arts and culture in conjunction with the expansion of the Triangle Regional Transit System in North Carolina. The second, hosted by ULI Michigan, focused on the expansion of the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. These programs explored how creative placemaking strategies can add value to the community, promote healthy places, and be implemented in real estate and infrastructure developments.

We are grateful to the Kresge Foundation for its support of the ULI Creative Placemaking project. Kresge defines creative placemaking as the deliberate integration of arts and culture into efforts to stabilize disinvested communities. At ULI, we are exploring how real estate and land use leaders are engaging with arts and artists, and working to lift up best practices in integrating real estate, health, and creative placemaking.
