Three panels of nationally renowned land use and community development experts convened by ULI in spring 2013 recommended strategies for creating healthy living environments in three Colorado communities.

The three Colorado assignments represented the first time ULI Advisory Services panels have concentrated specifically on the connection between health and land use.

The panels, each of which was chaired by Ed McMahon, ULI senior resident fellow for sustainable development, looked at three communities with different typologies: urban, suburban, and rural. The locations were Westwood, an urban neighborhood in Denver about three miles from downtown; Arvada, a first-ring Denver suburb; and Lamar, a rural community in the eastern part of the state.

The Colorado Health Foundation was the sponsor for all three panels, with on-the-ground assistance from local governments and organizations.
