Senior Director, District Councils

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Director, District Councils, reports into the Senior Vice President, District Councils and works closely with the Vice Presidents, District Councils, providing operational support to all District Council local and regional teams. S/he also provides leadership, expertise and coordination for affinity group programs and activities on behalf of the Americas Region District Council network.

The Senior Director leads a team that plays a critical role in disseminating and sharing information across the network to ensure that the District Councils operate efficiently and effectively. The Senior Director will support the field staff and volunteer-member leaders who run each District Council by facilitating information sharing events, programs, and initiatives. S/he will build peer-to-peer networks and manage information-sharing programs, communication channels, and vehicles that foster the exchange of useful information and alignment of ULI activities across the network.

In order to best support the District Councils and their members, the Senior Director provides support as part of the extended network management team, whether it’s supporting a strategic plan or directing the network. The Senior Director will implement clear communications strategies and management system support to the group, ensuring that processes and operations are consistent with the broader ULI organization.

This is a full time exempt position located in Washington D.C. reporting to the Senior Vice President, District Councils.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide clear direction and leadership to the network management team.
  • Recruit, develop, motivate, and retain outstanding staff while building a culture of trust and accountability.
  • Manage employee performance and oversee staff development, drawing from best practices in ULI HR policies and principles.
  • Ensure a smooth delivery of annual meetings (staff summit, PC/DC exchange groups, etc.).
  • Maintain the District Council Handbook and other network specific policies and procedures.
  • Manage team communications such as ongoing webinars, the monthly electronic newsletter, and the department’s website.
  • Provide support to ULI Americas affinity groups (Women’s Leadership Initiative, Young Leaders Group, NEXT).
  • Provide oversight and coordination to grant programs.
  • Provide oversight to contractors within the network, ensuring that contracts meet legal and ULI process requirements.

EXPERIENCE:

We are looking for someone who has experience in operations management and brings a highly collaborative approach. Ideal candidates for this position will share our commitment and passion for responsible land use and will bring the following experiences and attributes:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience of operations at a management level (i.e. able to set direction, prioritize, communicate, deliver on key goals).
  • Excellent leadership and management skills; understanding of how to help teams stay motivated and results-focused.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a complex matrix, client-focused and team-oriented culture.
  • Well organized, able to manage complex projects and work programs to deadlines.
  • Proven ability to build strong relations inside organizations and with external partners.
  • Creative and problem-solving skills; ability to deliver programs across a wide range of priorities.
  • Proven ability to and present to large and small groups.
  • Experience in overseeing, preparing and monitoring an annual budget and financial statements; strong business acumen and fiscally responsible.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications.
  • Experience in a not-for-profit membership/chapter-based business setting is desirable.
  • Experience in meeting facilitation and change management is desirable.

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.

EDUCATION:

  • BA required, advanced degree preferred.
