Director, Women’s Leadership Initiative

POSITION SUMMARY:

The purpose of the ULI Women’s Leadership Initiative is to promote the advancement of women leaders at ULI and in the real estate industry. At present, the Institute’s membership is 28 percent women and the objective is to increase the number of women members and to directly increase the number of women in positions of ULI leadership, and to indirectly increase the number of women in leadership roles at their companies. To achieve these objectives, the WLI undertakes a variety of activities, including education, sponsorship, networking, and outreach, both internally at ULI and externally through partnerships with other aligned organizations. The WLI leads a number of initiatives throughout the year and also organizes programs and events at the national ULI Fall and Spring Meetings. The WLI also has active initiatives at 43 ULI district councils, the Institute’s local chapters.

ULI is seeking a Director to join the Americas District Councils Team to lead the Institute’s WLI activities in leadership, development, and engagement of women members in the real estate industry. This position reports to the Senior Director, District Councils.

The Director will support the WLI committees at both the national and local levels of ULI. The Director will be responsible for implementing the WLI program of work developed in collaboration with the WLI Executive Committee, spearheading new initiatives, and supporting an active network of local WLIs. He/she will be responsible for establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other departments within ULI headquarters.

In addition, this position will also provide support and guidance to the Real Estate Diversity Initiative (REDI) and collaborate with the District Councils team to develop effective network-wide capacity building related to those and other programs.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports all aspects of the Women’s Leadership Initiative, and designated leadership activities including the business plan, budget, and volunteer support.
  • Manages member-led WLI Executive and Steering Committees and serves as Secretary.
  • Organizes and convenes national WLI programming events at least twice a year and maintains open and supportive communication with members of the WLI Executive Committee at all times.
  • Manages annual WLI grant and scholarship programs.
  • Develops lines of communication between WLI Americas Executive and Steering Committee and district councils WLIs.
  • Facilitates the exchange of information and best practices across the district councils network for engaging and development of women as members of ULI and leaders in the industry.
  • Works with the WLI Executive Committee and other ULI departments to secure additional funding to support WLI’s work if deemed necessary.
  • Support partnerships with outside organizations.
  • Proactively proposes potential programming, research, education, and outreach initiatives to achieve WLI’s mission and executes on these ideas with the Executive Committee’s guidance.
  • Maintains a robust social media presence for WLI.
  • Supports all aspects of the REDI program and designated leadership activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA or master’s degree in relevant field or related work experience.
  • At least seven years of progressively responsible experience, preferably with at least three years of managing volunteer-driven initiatives.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with ULI member leadership and coordinate their participation in complex, long-running programs.
  • Knowledge, experience, and expertise in a broad range of topics related to leadership development, planning and community development, real estate development, and finance.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Experience with collaboration and teamwork across networks.
  • Experience in working with and for nonprofit organizations.
