2014 ULI/Carolyn and Preston Butcher Forum on Multifamily Housing
The ULI/Carolyn and Preston Butcher Forum on Multifamily Housing is an annual invitation-only forum that brings together leading practitioners from across the multifamily housing industry to explore various aspects of the industry. The forum series has been generously endowed by Carolyn and Preston Butcher. Mr. Butcher, a ULI trustee and ULI Foundation Governor, is chairman and chief executive officer of Legacy Partners, a 45-year-old real estate investment, development and property management company based in Foster City, CA.
The inaugural forum took place on January 16, 2014 in Washington, DC with 75 participants representing 14 states and the District of Columbia. This event was organized in partnership with the American Planning Association and the National Multifamily Housing Council.
The 2014 forum underscored the changing housing landscape and what it means for the future of multifamily rental housing in the U.S. by addressing this overarching question: As the demographic and economic future of the U.S. continues to evolve, how does the development community need to adapt to create a new multifamily residential landscape?
America is a diverse and changing nation. As the U.S. economy and housing sector begin to show signs of recovery, it is apparent that a new housing and community development landscape is taking shape. It is also apparent that leading developers, planners and public officials have a real opportunity to demonstrate great leadership in shaping this new landscape at a time when the need for multifamily rental housing is on the rise.
Forum participants explore a wide ranging set of issues through a morning of thoughtful panel presentations and group discussions. The afternoon was spent in small working groups tackling some of the issues raised in more depth.
Selected resources from the forum are available below. A report based on the ideas generated during the forum is in development and will be released later this year.
