Programming Focuses on Challenges, Opportunities for Supporting Healthy Housing in Healthy Places

WASHINGTON (May 1, 2014) – The Urban Land Institute (ULI), a global research and education institute dedicated to responsible land use and creating thriving, healthy communities, will hold its annual Housing Opportunity conference May 14-16 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Denver.

This year’s conference, hosted by the ULI Terwilliger Center for Housing, will focus on how healthy design intersects with the industry goal of expanding opportunities for residential development. The conference features national experts on residential development and housing policy, in addition to covering a range of industry issues. The conference programming will cover topics such as demographics and their impact on healthy placemaking, how green housing can achieve both positive economic and health outcomes, ways multigenerational housing and intergenerational communities are changing the housing industry, as well as how a residential development can incorporate health and still be financially successful.

Housing Opportunity is the institute’s premier housing event and regularly attracts a diverse mix of private and nonprofit real estate developers, public officials, urban and regional planners, housing advocates, smart growth and sustainability experts, architects, investors and lenders, and real estate agents.

ULI recently held its 2012 Fall Meeting at Denver’s Colorado Convention Center and is currently in a multi-year partnership with the Colorado Health Foundation. The partnership originated with three ULI Advisory Services panels that convened in the spring of 2013 to recommend strategies for creating healthy living environments that increase opportunities to be physically active in three different settings – a suburb, a rural area and an urban neighborhood in Colorado. The panels, sponsored by the Foundation, offered advice on incorporating health-conscious design and development into Arvada, a community on the outskirts of Denver; Lamar, located in a remote area in the southeast part of the state; and Westwood, which spans 1.5 square miles in southwest Denver.
