WASHINGTON (December 21 2020) – ULI Foundation governor John McNellis, author of the popular book Making It in Real Estate: Starting Out as a Developer, has written a second edition, offering updated and practical advice on becoming a real estate developer and owning a development firm.
Drawing on more than 35 years in real estate development, McNellis shares practical tips and advice from his experience having founded McNellis Partners in 1992. Peppered with witty anecdotes and insights, along with accumulated wisdom, the book is a must-have for those seeking a career in property.
The book is designed to appeal to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as to early-to-mid-career professionals, interested in working in real estate development or its associated fields such as architecture, finance/investment, land use law, construction, and urban planning. It contains 20 all-new chapters with updated information, including guidance on how to weather downturns, good leadership practices, how to make good investment decisions, and the regulatory environment. McNellis covers the ins and outs of how to get financing; working with architects, brokers, and other professionals; how to make a good deal; and how to win approval for your project, in a format that ditches academic language and reads more like having coffee with a mentor.
The book has received praise from several distinguished ULI members and real estate entrepreneurs. Mark L. Myers, retired head of commercial real estate, Wells Fargo & Company, calls it a ‘must-read’, and said: “McNellis fills his book with rich insight, great advice, humor, and inspiration—sharing his deep experience and wisdom, helping us think more clearly about real estate and assorted business issues.”
