About HafenCity
Location: Hamburg, Germany
Developer: HafenCity Hamburg GmbH
Masterplanners/Designers: Kees Christiaanse,KCAP/ASTOC et al.
Size: 1.27 million square meters
HafenCity, the inner city of Hamburg, is expanding toward the River Elbe by redeveloping the adjacent former port area into a completely new downtown area. Taking shape on a brownfield and former port area, the district features the old harbor basins − an outstanding feature. With the new development project, the lively urban space is bringing together workplaces (50 percent); residential uses (30 percent); and culture and leisure, tourism and retail facilities, and public and private higher education (20 percent).
The district is identifiable by its very central location and high standards as reflected in its fine-grained mix of uses, international standards of urbanity and ecological sustainability, and innovative development strategies and processes. A total of 45,000 jobs and 6,000 residential units will be created and HafenCity will accommodate more than 100,000 visitors per day.
